Are you a certified biking aficionado? If you love doing this sport, you need to have a bike rack in your car. This is one of the most important things that you should invest in, next to the bike. However, it is not easy to choose your own bike rack. There are many options for bike racks inn the market today. This will only make the selection process even harder. Among all these types, you should pick the rack that is best for your needs. Another consideration is the type of bike that you have. There are generally four different types of bike racks that you can choose from. To make a good decision, you should know what each bike rack is. Here are the types of bicycle racks:
1. Roof mounted bicycle racks. These are preferred by many people because they can be used to store and transport bikes conveniently. The rack is mounted on top of the roof of the car. Thus, the bike has to be placed on car’s roof. This is a convenient arrangement because the back of the car is not blocked in any way. Some models of the roof mounted bike rack can complement an already present roof rack on the car. However, some models work better without a roof rack.
There are certain disadvantages to these racks though. First, the bicycle is bare on top of the roof, and thus exposed to the elements. Second, the bike is also prone to being damaged when hit buy debris or rocks. Third, some drivers tend to forget and be careless about driving through low ceiling areas.
2. Trunk mounted bicycle racks. These are ideal for transporting the bike on short travels. These are also popular for being affordable. In fact, these are the cheapest types of bicycle racks in the market. By being stored in the trunk, the bike is perfectly hidden from rocks and debris. This can keep the bike safe. Some disadvantages of these racks through include the fact that the bike may continue bouncing in the trunk. The storage position is not as secure as the other types of racks. With the bike in the trunk, access to the rear hatch is blocked.
3. Hitch bicycle racks. These enable hitching of the bike as a convenient arrangement. However, the car should be installed with a hitch or a receiver. Some hitch racks are solidly placed to the back of the car which can secure the bike. Other types of hitch racks are installed in a swinging manner. These are convenient for getting access to the back of the car. These racks can secure the bike. The disadvantage of these racks though is that the back of the car would be inaccessible, except when you use the swinging rack.
4. Truck bed bicycle racks. These make use of the bed of your truck. The truck bed can accommodate more than two bikes. These work for the security and protection of the bikes. However, the bikes will consume the space on the truck beds. When you travel with bikes, you cannot bring many items with you.
